Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to assist Generations Federal Credit Union to live out its Mission, Do the Right Thing, by providing remarkable service to both external members and internal members. Underwrites all consumer loan requests ensuring sound decisioning, thorough notations and adherence to policies.  Monitors consumer loan portfolio and makes recommendations to that are in line with the credit unions objectives, loan performance and loan profitability while meeting the needs of our members.  Educates/counsels members and staff on consumer loan products and aspects of underwriting.  Promotes and actively pursues participation in all Lending initiatives.  Effectively cross sells all credit union products and services.

Primary Duties

  1. Works closely with the AVP, Consumer Credit Officer with respect to the staff’s performance, assists to enhance their knowledge, understanding and utilization of our guidelines and policies. Ensures that their understanding and practices are consistent with the department and credit union objectives.   Makes recommendations to management in regards to coaching, training, processes and workflows.
  2. Works with department leadership and the Lending Systems Analyst/Trainer to improve existing processes and workflows, and effectively communicates suggestions, ideas, and feedback to management and other team members.
  3. Handles complex calls, member complaints and escalated issues.  Responds to requests (internally and externally) in a timely and professional manner.
  4. Monitors various reports, audit reviews, and loan-level data to identify patterns of risk, ensure adherence to policies and overall product performance. Makes recommendations to management as appropriate to improve credit risk evaluations and underwriting practices.
  5. Underwrites and renders sound and timely decisions that are consistent with our established consumer loan policies (authorities granted), procedures, state and federal laws and regulations. Is responsible for the justification of the decisions rendered and providing informative and detailed explanation as documented in the loan file.  Actively mitigates credit risk by evaluating guidelines, analyzing creditworthiness and valuations of collateral.  Underwrites complex files and provides detailed and thorough explanation of decisions.
  6. Maintains a thorough understanding of all products offered, the associated terms and rates to successfully promotes and education our members and staff.  Makes recommendations for possible new products and or product enhancements that are in line with the credit unions objectives, loan performance and loan profitability while meeting the needs of our members.  
  7. Provides exceptional service to our members and staff through written and verbal communication of our credit guidelines through clearing stipulations, responding to inquiries, and supporting the underwriting team. Performs as subject matter expert for all members/staff on the wise use of credit, credit report issues, and general credit worthiness. Reconciles complaints with authority or refers problem with recommended solution to appropriate senior staff or manager.
  8. Appropriately cross sell and up-sell opportunities to acquire new members and/or entice existing member’s usage of lending products and services. 
  9. Understands and applies working knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations, policies and procedures related to Consumer Lending.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Must have a high school diploma or equivalency.  Some college level courses in Accounting/Finance, or approved equivalent in bank related education preferred.


Experience

Must have a minimum of three (3) years of consumer underwriting experience.  Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Must demonstrate an analytical ability to interpret data from various sources and make sound recommendations for decisions based on logical and unbiased reasoning.
  • Must have knowledge of financial institution policies and procedures, and all relevant laws, rules and regulations.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Must possess good organizational and customer service skills, as well as excellent mathematical skills. 
  • Must be able to type 35-40 WPM; 10-key by touch. 
  • Must be PC literate and competent in a Windows environment. 

Physical/Other Requirements

Must be able to:

  • Work non-standard hours to include evenings and Saturdays.
  • Stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Lift 10-20 lbs.
